💱 What should I know about money, currency, and exchange rates in Kenya?

Kenya’s official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). While major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops in major cities, it’s advisable to carry some cash—especially for small purchases, tips, or markets in rural areas.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Currency Exchange: You can exchange U.S. dollars at the airport, banks, or reputable currency exchange bureaus. USD bills should be newer than 2009 and in good condition to be accepted.

  • Exchange Rate: The rate fluctuates, but as a general reference, 1 USD ≈ 130–150 KES. (We’ll provide a current estimate prior to departure.)

  • ATMs: Widely available in Nairobi and Mombasa; notify your bank before traveling to avoid card holds.

  • Mobile Payments: Kenya is known for M-Pesa, a popular mobile money system, but it's typically used by residents. Most travelers will rely on cards or cash.

  • Tipping: Gratuities are included in your Path21 package, but additional tipping for exceptional service is always appreciated.

We’ll provide detailed pre-trip guidance on how much local currency to carry and where to exchange it safely.

🗣️ What language is spoken in Kenya? Will I be able to communicate easily?

Yes—communication is easy and welcoming in Kenya! The country has two official languages: English and Swahili.

  • English is widely spoken in cities, tourist areas, hotels, and business settings. You’ll have no problem navigating your trip, asking questions, or engaging in conversations with locals.

  • Swahili is the national language spoken throughout Kenya and adds a rich cultural layer to your experience. While you don't need to speak it, you’ll pick up a few phrases along the way—and our team will guide you through any helpful expressions.

As part of the Path21 experience, we offer a light cultural orientation to help you feel even more connected, including a few fun Swahili greetings like:

  • Jambo! – Hello

  • Asante Sana – Thank you

  • Karibu – Welcome

  • Hakuna Matata – No worries

💉 Are any vaccines required or recommended for travel to Kenya?

Yes, certain vaccinations are recommended—and in some cases required— for entry into Kenya and to ensure your health and safety during your trip.

Required for Entry:

  • Yellow Fever:

    • Required if you are traveling from or transiting through a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission (e.g., many countries in Central or West Africa, or South America).

    • If required, you must present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate upon arrival in Kenya.

    • If traveling directly from the U.S. or Europe, it is typically not required—but always check the most up-to-date entry requirements before your trip.

💡 Highly Recommended:

  • Typhoid

  • Hepatitis A

  • Hepatitis B

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap)

  • Malaria Prevention:

    • Kenya is a malaria-risk area. A malaria prophylaxis (pill) is strongly recommended. Your healthcare provider can guide you on the best option.  We can also provide our experiences with malaria.

🛫 Travel Tip:

You should consult your doctor or a travel clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure to discuss your personal health needs and any updates to CDC or WHO guidelines.
